Hello and welcome to April! For the first podcast episode of each month I bring fellow Pinterest pro Vincent Ng on to the show to talk about the latest Pinterest news and trends. This month’s show is filled with super hot news there’s even been some government involvement and Pinterest was hacked!
To kick things off in this episode Vincent and I chat about upcoming and past travels including my trip Social Media Marketing World in San Diego, California last week. I was able to meet some of the Oh So Pinteresting community members in real life! It was absolutely amazing to meet these lovely ladies in person.

FTC sends a warning about Pinterest contests
Pinterest Contest were a BIG topic in the news this past week. The FTC gave Cole Haan, an upscale fashion brand a warning about a Pinterest contest they were hosting. Essentially the warning stated that pins could be construed as endorsements for the products incentivized by the prize offered.
What does this mean for future contests on Pinterest, are they worth the risk?
Pinterest accounts hacked
Some darn hackers worked their way into Pinterest and caused all sorts of mischief. Some users lost followers while other accounts were flooded with butt pictures. Ugh, don’t these guys have something better to do!
Promoted pins on Pinterest
We seem to be getting closer and closer to promoted pins on Pinterest. It was implied that the initial offering will only be available to advertisers with huge budgets. Vincent and I talk about if this a good idea or not. Could this approach keep Pinterest feeds free of low quality advertising?
Links in Pinterest pin descriptions
One Pinterest strategy that I have taught has been to occasionally include a link in your Pinterest pin descriptions. (Images pinned form your site) for a couple of weeks these links did not work.
A member of the Pinterest for Business Workshop, Susan Schlenger was having trouble with the links in some of her video pins. She pinned her YouTube videos but included a link to her main site in the pin description. When the link was clicked on, it would take you to YouTube. Vincent tested this and found that no matter what link you put in the description, when clicked, it would take you to the source of the image. He even wrote a blog post about the change. The very next day after he published his post, the links went back to working the way they had before. Poor Vincent, but at least they’re working again.
If you try this technique please only include links in the descriptions of pins that you own, images that come from your website or blog. Make sure that link to something that is relevant to the pin such as your homepage or a complementary blog post.
Shopify study reveals high Pinterest order values
A Shopify study reveals that visual platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram and Polyvore lead in consumer spending over platforms such as Facebook and twitter. Vincent and I discuss why we think these visual based platforms are so successful for this whether all of the time, money and effort put into Facebook advertising is really the best approach for businesses
