It’s finally happening! No more waiting for the Instagram fairy to bless you with the Instagram verified badge. No more secret black market for purchasing that little blue check (yes, people really did that!). For the first time ever, the social media platform is being completely transparent about how to get verified on Instagram.
The application will shortly be available to all, whether you’re using a personal or business Instagram account. In the name of research, I applied for Instagram verification myself and I break down step- by- step (with screenshots!) exactly how to do it and what to expect.
Ready to take the leap and request your own blue badge? Let’s jump in!
Wait, What IS a Verified Badge?
You may have seen a little blue checkmark next to some of your favorite IG account names. This blue check means that the account is verified by Instagram. In other words, the person, brand or business behind this account is authentic.

So why is the blue badge so important? Generally, influential people and businesses on social media are subject to fake accounts, copycats and imposters being made with their likeness. Not cool!
The blue badge creates peace of mind for followers that the person or brand behind the account is real.
While super important for authenticating Instagram accounts for followers, the verification badge has also turned into a symbol of posterity. Basically, if you’ve earned a blue badge you must be somebody, right?
If you’re wondering who exactly gets a verified profile on Instagram, the platform leaves the exact requirements a little vague.
Who Gets a Verified Profile on Instagram?
Prior to the application becoming available, Instagram’s criteria for choosing who got verified was a mystery. One day, a blue check might appear next to your name (seemingly) out of thin air!
Instagram hints at their criteria for Instagram Verification in the new application process.
“A verified badge is a check that appears next to an Instagram account’s name to indicate that the account is the authentic presence of a notable public figure, celebrity, global brand or entity in represents. “
With the new process, just about anyone can apply for verification from Instagram. That doesn’t mean we’ll all be verified, though. The exact definition of a notable public figure or celebrity isn’t clear – and it seems like internal Instagram moderators will be the judge.
While there’s value to all of us in getting Instagram verified, those with the most followers and greatest reach do have the most to lose, so we can expect there to be some (unspecified) threshold of followers or reach required to be accepted. The rest of us should just keep on building our followers and reach until we qualify as well!
That said, there is no harm in applying – and a lot you could gain if you’re approved.
Why You’d Want to Be Verified on Instagram
Does the coveted blue badge really mean anything? It does! In order to be verified, you have to upload some personal information which identifies you as the REAL you. Additionally, you get some pretty cool benefits which can make a real difference in your Instagram marketing.
Get Verified on Instagram to Build Trust
If you’re the least bit Insta-famous, you’ve likely been impersonated on Instagram at least once. While you and your friends can (and should) report these hooligans, it’s frustrating, a waste of time, and can make people suspicious of even genuine accounts. Having that blue check is reassurance to your viewers and followers that you are the real deal. And trust is so important on social!
Get Instagram Links in Stories!
Verified accounts were the first to able to link their Instagram stories to blog posts, landing pages, product listings – just about anything! Now that you don’t necessarily have to have ten thousand followers to get verified, we can all expect to be able to generate a whole lot more traffic from Instagram!
Just make sure you use a trackable link so you can tell where those clicks are coming from (we like bit.ly)
How to Get Verified on Instagram
It’s simple! Just:
- Visit your Instagram profile.
- Click on the menu.
- Click on the “settings” gear.
- Find and click on “Request Verification.”
- Enter your full name (your personal name). Notice the disclaimer: “Submitting a request for verification does not guarantee that your account will be verified.”
- Upload a photo of your ID. This could be any one of:
- Driver’s license (with name and D.O.B)
- Passport (with name and D.O.B)
- National ID Card (with name and D.O.B)
- Business tax filing
- Business utility bill
- Article of incorporation.
That’s it! Instagram will let you know once they’ve reviewed your request. I’ve just applied, so I’ll have to come back and update you with the reply and how long it takes – assuming they accept my application. I can imagine they are being inundated right now!
Update: I applied on August 28 and got this reply on September 1:
Since I’m “Authentic,” “Unique,” and have a “Complete” profile, the issue seems to be that I’m not “Notable” enough. Oh well. It was worth a try!
